Are Dental Implants Available on the NHS?

In the vast majority of cases, dental implants are not available on the NHS. The NHS considers implants cosmetic in nearly all tooth-loss scenarios. They are funded only where there is a clear clinical necessity that cannot be met by conventional dentures or bridges, and the decision is made by a specialist, not your regular dentist.

When Will the NHS Fund Dental Implants?

The NHS may fund implants in a small number of circumstances:

• Oral cancer treatment: patients who have had jawbone or teeth removed as part of cancer surgery may be eligible
• Severe facial trauma: significant accidents causing tooth and bone loss
• Congenital tooth absence (hypodontia): patients born missing multiple teeth may qualify, particularly younger patients where dentures are severely impractical
• Ectodermal dysplasia: a genetic condition affecting tooth development

Standard tooth loss from decay, gum disease, or age does not qualify for NHS funding.

How to Apply for NHS Implants

1. Speak to your NHS dentist about your situation and whether you may meet the clinical criteria.
2. Your dentist refers you to a specialist maxillofacial or oral surgery department at an NHS hospital.
3. The specialist assesses your case and decides whether implants are clinically necessary.
4. If approved, treatment is provided at NHS Band 3 cost (£306.80 in England as of) or free for those with exemption certificates.
