The Dental Implant Procedure — Step-by-Step Guide

What happens at each stage, how long it takes, recovery, and what to expect on the day

⚠ This guide is for informational purposes. Your specific treatment plan will differ based on your clinical needs — always follow the guidance of your GDC-registered implant dentist.

Overview of the Dental Implant Process

Dental implant treatment is not a single appointment — for a standard single implant it spans 4–9 months across multiple visits. The timeline extends if preparatory work such as bone grafting or tooth extraction is needed first. Understanding each stage helps you plan around work, budget and recovery time.

  1. Consultation and 3D CT scan — your dentist assesses your bone density, gum health and overall oral health. A cone beam CT scan gives a detailed 3D map of your jaw to plan implant position precisely. This appointment typically costs £100–£400.
  2. Preparatory treatment — if you have active gum disease, it must be treated before any implant work. Tooth extraction, bone grafting (if bone density is insufficient) or a sinus lift (upper jaw) adds 3–6 months of healing time.
  3. Implant placement surgery — performed under local anaesthetic, occasionally with sedation. A small incision exposes the jawbone; the titanium implant post is drilled and inserted. The gum is stitched closed. Duration: 1–2 hours for a single implant. You'll receive a temporary crown or healing cap.
  4. Osseointegration — healing phase — over the next 3–6 months the titanium fuses with your jawbone in a process called osseointegration. During this period you should avoid hard foods and maintain meticulous oral hygiene around the site.
  5. Abutment placement — once the implant is fully integrated, a minor procedure attaches the abutment (the connector) to the implant post. Some implants have the abutment placed at the same time as the implant.
  6. Crown impression and fitting — your dentist takes impressions (or digital scans) to create your custom crown. The final porcelain or zirconia crown is cemented or screwed onto the abutment and adjusted for your bite. This is the final appointment.

What to Expect on Surgery Day

Most patients are surprised by how straightforward implant surgery is under local anaesthetic. You will feel pressure and vibration but no sharp pain. The appointment lasts 1–3 hours depending on complexity. You should arrange a lift home and plan for 24–48 hours of rest with soft food. Swelling and mild discomfort for 3–5 days is normal; severe pain, fever or excessive bleeding should prompt an immediate call to your clinic.

Same-Day Implants — Immediate Loading

Some clinics offer immediate loading — a temporary crown placed on the same day as the implant. This requires excellent bone density and precise planning. It is most commonly offered as part of All-on-4 treatment where the bridge is loaded on surgery day. Single-tooth immediate loading is available at specialist clinics at a premium. Not everyone is a candidate — your dentist will assess suitability from the CT scan.
